Session #5 Andrew Crandall

New Year’s day came especially early for Into The Hill this year. With no chance of any of us getting enough sleep to be beautiful, we began it with a session in my apartment. There was a knock on the door at 08:00. Andrew Crandall, long time friend of the crew and native Dubuquer was in town from Minneapolis for just a few hours. So we were blessed to catch him.

Andrew’s a man of few words, a reticent prophet. More David than other lyricists of late, he writes of religious failures and lies told to God as one naked, without armor before the Goliath-sized consequence of such actions. It is the case in the song “Come.” Of it he says, “Is about our lies and God’s truth.” With such lying on our lips, Andrew says it’s as if, the chord of truth is blowing fraying in the wind. Such desperation lifts when the chorus comes in a hopeful phrase, “But I heard You saying come, all you who are weary. Come, all you who are poor. Come, all you who would be something more than broken, lost, or torn.” Be sure to download it FOR FREE at the bottom of the page.

It may be clearly said that Andrew’s confidence in the person of God pervades his music. Like the fall of Goliath came from the simplicity of a sling, Andrew’s ingenuous depiction of human experience cuts through the air on the smooth arc of his stone gorgeous melodies to fall giant disorders in the hearts of his listeners. His is a visionary advocacy for the things of God and for the people of God. There are but few who aren’t humbled in the shadow of his message.
