Dispatch 1: Stars Go Dim

Stars Go Dim. The name may sound apocalyptic, but the the music possesses a toe-tapping pop lilt that is a far cry from any dismal visions of destruction. Equally full of hope is the duo that fronts this up and coming pop-soul band. They’re garnering attention from those who really matter–music fans. Stars Go Dim is already generating a buzz, despite the fact that they haven’t yet released a full album, and have done zero touring. Not bad considering there is at least one thing standing in the way of their success: New Mexico. Joey Avalos, who serves as resident song-writer for the team, lives in Arizona. His partner Chris Cleveland (who delivers the smooth, soulful vocals characteristic of their sound) resides in the Sooner State (that’s Oklahoma, kids).

It’s an arrangement that is becoming less curious in the rapidly changing music industry. Long-distance collaboration is happening more and more, freeing artists to experiment with musicians with whom they otherwise might not have the chance. For Avalos and Cleveland, the product it yields is irresistibly catchy pop that delivers what pop is meant to deliver–good clean fun.

Joey and I chatted about collaborative song-writing and the band’s upcoming album. More importantly, Joey bravely attempted to answer an age-old question: just what is it with love songs? He even quotes Lionel Richie. Cool.
