Session #8 - The Sisters Priest, Molly and Laura
So, after the actors in the high school production of Reginald Rose’s Twelve Angry Jurors shuffled out of the auditorium, the INTOTHEHILL crew swept the stage. That is, transformed center stage into a recording studio to track The Sisters Priest, Molly & Laura.
Nervousness was definitely in the air, but strictly the good kind of nervousness, mind you. Beyond the digital recording device nestled atop the family piano, this documentation elicits the first professional recording experience for both sisters. Molly recognized this as a great opportunity to gain the experience of putting something down permanently, to show the world a bared-heart in a well crafted song.
A self-proclaimed “highly exaggerated, bitter breakup song,” Molly explains she wrote the tune “a little over two years ago when I was sixteen, because of an almost-relationship that was a bust the whole time, because the special boy was not honest with me about some important issues.” Who among us can’t remember that first “sweet tasting poison” of love-lost, delivered to any/all unsuspecting adolescent dreamers? That is to say, the human condition rarely escapes a broken heart, at some point, anyway. The lyrics and the melody and the waltzing cello lines deliver a brilliant pop song chorus.
All in all, the music itself stands as a well crafted testament to a budding songwriter. Influences include the likes of George Winston and Alanis Morrisette. The latter is definitely apparent in melody and overall vibe. Winston shows up more in the keystrokes, I believe. Also sited for influences were Sarah McLaughlin and Ben Folds. Personally I would pay to watch Molly Priest break piano strings like Ben Folds. However, Molly claims she has “no serious plans” to pursue songwriting.
She may yet change her tune.

This is an inspirational song and I felt your heart and soul you are very enthusiastic about your music! You are a talented and gifted singer, songwirter, and musican and your sister is a wonderful celloist. Your song gave me goosebumps it was so good! and one day I’ll be able to say I knew Molly Priest before she was famous. I’ll be listening for you in the top 40 countdown!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Thanks, Gregory, Nate, and the rest of Blackwood Media for giving the Sisters Priest (I love the name) this opportunity! It is very well done on all fronts. I may be biased - okay, I know I am - but I think this is only the beginning for Molly’s songwriting. It’s going to be fun to watch! Thanks again for all YOUR work.

Beautiful blend of piano, cello and voice. I like the ebb and flow of this piece. Was Laura’s cello part written (and memorized) or improvised? Great job!

Molly wrote the cello part (not quite on paper.. bits and pieces of it on paper, the rest I just learned by ear from what she gave me and told me to play) and then I memorized it. :) It was a lot of fun to play. Thanks everybody! And thanks, Gregory!
