Andy Zipf in a word: intimate. No matter the venue, no matter the volume, it’s always a living room. “We’re all in this together,” he says. And he means it. Where the show-worthy stalwart’s previous tours have been the feather — acoustic and close, it was the hammer on Day #7 of his new tour that brought a new, Keep On understanding to the steady gravity of Zipf’s song writing. The more electric hour of old and new tunes put him larger than life–literally. And if gets before the eyes of the right people, it may keep him there permanently.
The Pfriends on Pfilm tour (play off the silent “p” in Zipf’s last name) was a concept a few years in the making. Andy, a notoriously interactive performer, had the idea of becoming a canvas. Inspired by the Sigur Rós video, he went for it, rehearsed, and brought it to his pfan base. The drummer/keyboardist and he perform the show in white jumpsuits. A third pfriend plays, much like a dj spins, images and lights, live video feed and clips that magnify the indie-pop star’s set on a 300 square foot canvas. Few move a room like Andy. There’s reason he packs coffee houses, podcasts, and bars. But the rich audiovisual tapestry cut by the Keep On man himself was indescribable, I’ve been to nothing like it. Tabula rasa to not only me, though, but the whole of the night’s show goers at Uncle Freddy’s Gallery in Highland, Indiana. For when Brandon the gallery gopher returned with a PA system to Pfrends on Pfilm descended upon his familiar classroom, the place was void of but the massive canvas. He called the scene post-apocalyptic as we carried out plaster busts and turned over garbage cans to set the stage.
The set itself, in my mind, moved Andy from coffeehouses to coliseums. Though absent of long time favorite covers like “Yellow Brick Road” or “Crazy,” a powerfully placed rendition of Joe South’s “Games People Play” unfolded an acoustic center of the set dealing with social issues. New tunes as well as old are available at discrevolt.com, or, the majority of the show is available for FREE download below.

Great camera work. It feels better than being there.. really up close. How do I post that? The footage really captures what he does, I want to send it around.

i want to see this. he has already powerfully moved a room with his voice, presence, and guitar alone. i hope to experience andy on canvas soon.
and i love how you ended that, riley. “hiding under the indie pop-rocks? lift yourself. have some zipf on us.”
